A Historical Summary of
St. Anselm’s College Edmund Rice Academy Trust
•St. Anselm’s College was founded by its trustees, the Congregation of Christian Brothers in 1933.
•It came as a response from the Bishop of Shrewsbury, who requested the provision of grammar school opportunities for academically able Catholic and Christian boys in Wirral and Cheshire.
•Since 1933 St. Anselm pupils’ have progressed to university and the service of their communities, church and state and have been prominent in the professions, academic life and the arts.
•The College has passed through a variety of governance structures:
Direct grant, independent, grant maintained and voluntary aided. In 2011 we became an Academy whilst remaining a Roman Catholic Grammar School.
The College Mission Today
To educate young Christian men equipped for fulfilling lives of leadership and service in the 21st century and who will also have the conviction and confidence to uphold and represent the timeless values of our faith in the modern world.
Christian Brothers Education
Many boys taught by the Christian Brothers in Ireland and England went on to achieve great success in public life.
